General Counsel
The General Counsel is the Chief Legal Officer of the Department of the Navy,
and provides legal advice and services to the Secretary of the Navy. The General
Counsel is responsible for providing legal services to the Under Secretary and
the Assistant Secretaries and their staffs. The General Counsel is also responsible
for providing legal services to subordinate Department of the Navy commands and
organizations in: acquisition, business and commercial law, real and personal property,
civilian personnel law, environmental law, ethics and standards of conduct, and
other legal areas. The General Counsel manages the Office of the General Counsel.
The General Counsel maintains a close working relationship with the Judge Advocate General
of the Navy and Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant on all matters of common interest.
The Principal Deputy General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and Associate General Counsel
(Management) assist and support the General Counsel in execution of these duties.
