LAW STUDENTS
The selection of second and third-year students for summer law clerk (at the
GS-9 level) and permanent positions (at the GS-11 level) is generally made by
the Associate General Counsel (Management). The required interview, academic
performance and writing samples are the primary sources of information
concerning the applicant. To be hired, a candidate needs class standing in the
top one-third, law review/law journal participation or moot court achievement.
Individuals seeking positions as Intellectual Property attorneys must have an
adequate technical background, usually evidenced by an engineering degree or a
degree in the physical sciences, computer sciences, or mathematics. References
are verified. The Office seeks new attorneys and law clerks who have the
potential to handle the difficult and challenging assignments that confront all
OGC attorneys. Academic performance in law school is considered an important
predictor of future accomplishment. A strong academic record is, as a practical
matter, a prerequisite to consideration for a job offer.
